Nevertheless, in spite of its thriving tourist trade, Armação has retained much of its Portuguese traditions and away from the beach in the town itself, one can find a good many fish restaurants where food is prepared in time-honoured style over open-air charcoal grills. Of historical interest is the 17th century fort constructed by the rich owner of a local fishing fleet who had grown weary of the frequent pirate raids on the settlement and its vessels. Inside the fort is the tiny chapel of Santo António, which was built at the same time as the fort.

Local festivals include that of Our Lady of the Navigators, which takes place in August and comprises a spectacular nocturnal sea pageant of brightly decorated and illuminated fishing boats. Not to be missed.
